On Tuesday, March 9th, Selena Quintanilla’s fans will be able to purchase a new CD box collection titled “La Leyenda” which features Selena’s greatest hits. The Tejano superstar was tragically murdered March 31, 1995, in Corpus Christi, Texas by Yolanda Saldivar, the president of her fan club. Even though the 15th anniversary of her death is quickly approaching, Selena has maintained loyal fans (like myself) who continue to play her music and sing along to her infamous “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” song.

The CD box set includes an exclusive Selena charm and a book with personal messages from Selena’s family, friends and fans, as well as rare photos and art from her family’s collection. The CD box is divided as follows: Disc 1- Cumbias and Pop; Disc 2- Tejano and Rancheras; Disc 3- English Songs; Disc 4- Live Performances. This complete collection costs $99. If you’re looking for an affordable version, then check out the 2 CD deluxe edition for $20 (30 tracks). Whether you grew up loving the sexy and charismatic ‘Queen of Tejano’ or you find yourself watching the Selena movie over and over again, this is a great way to commemorate the life and achievements of this 23 year old Latina icon. Viva la musica de Selena! xoxo

A trendsetter in her days, Selena liked to design her own clothes and was known for her snug pants and midriff-baring bustiers. Her fashion style earned her the nickname “the Mexican Madonna.”

Montoya Finishes Third In Atlanta

Posted by badboybroadcast On March - 8 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Hampton, GA – NASCAR’s Juan Pablo Montoya had race leader Kurt Busch in his sights, but spun his tires on the final green-white-checkered restart and had to settle for a third-place finish in the Kobalt Tools 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Juan Pablo Montoya

“[I] never really had the fastest car except at the end before the last pit stop,” said Montoya, who led just three laps. “We were coming. I thought we had a chance to get to the 2 [Busch].

“Once you moved up the bottom in [Turns] 3 and 4, I thought, ‘Here we go; I think we got him.’”

Montoya was running down Busch until Carl Edwards spun Brad Keselowski, bringing out a caution flag with three laps remaining and setting up a green-white-checkered finish.

He charged from fifth to second on the restart, but another caution flag for a multicar wreck set up another green-white-checkered restart.

He had trouble on the final restart, however, allowing Busch to get away and runnerup Matt Kenseth to get by Montoya.

“First restart was pretty good,” Montoya said. “Second one [I] spun the hell out of the tires. Kind of surprised me.”

Unlike several other drivers, Montoya didn’t encounter any problems with his tires during the race.

“I think when you have a good balance, I think you can look after the tires a little bit better,” he said. “I’m one of the [drivers] that used to blow tires here always. To be on the other side is actually kind of nice.

“Goodyear improved the hell out of the tire from what we had last year.”

After taking place in several different countries, the next installment of “The Fast and the Furious” is going to go to South America. Vin Diesel has just taken it to his Facebook to inform that the crew for “Fast Five” have begun scouting in Brazil.

“Had a meeting with Justin Lin today regarding the Fast saga… some daring but fascinating thoughts in terms of action set pieces… and relationships, old and new,” so he wrote on Thursday, March 4. “The team is on their way to Brazil this evening, to scout, and to see what selection of cars there are.”

The first film was set in Southern California, where the fourth movie “Fast and Furious” also took place. The sequel “2 Fast 2 Furious” and the third installment “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift” meanwhile were filmed in Florida and Tokyo, Japan respectively.

Hispanic Surname Caused Election Loss

Posted by badboybroadcast On March - 3 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Victor Carrillo

Victor Carrillo, a Republican incumbent that ran for re-election for Texas Railroad Commissioner (the state agency that regulates oil and gas pumping and pipelines), believes he lost the primary to a relative unknown, David Porter, solely because of voter prejudice based on his Hispanic name.

“Given the choice between “Porter” and “Carrillo” — unfortunately, the Hispanic-surname was a serious setback from which I could never recover,” Carrillo told supporters in a letter, “although I did all in my power to overcome this built-in bias.”

Carrillo, who was appointed to the panel in 2003 before winning election a year later, had the support of top Republicans and vastly more money, according to campaign filings. Through Feb. 20, Carrillo had $322,601 on hand; Porter had $11,251.

Porter, who moved to Giddings after building a business in Midland, ousted Carrillo, the highest-ranking nonjudge Latino in Texas government, in an election some said was determined by ethnicity.

“We’ve got the problem of an Anglo surname versus a Hispanic,” said campaign consultant Susan Lilly, who said Carrillo’s campaign had spent at least $600,000. Candidates with any kind of unusual name are at a disadvantage, she said.

Here’s Carrillo’s letter to his supporters,

As you now surely know, last night I was defeated (61% / 39%) in my statewide Republican Primary by my opponent, David Porter. Porter, an unknown, no-campaign, no-qualification CPA from Midland residing in Giddings filed on the last day that he could file while I was waiting in Abilene to bury my dad. He has never held any elected office, has no geoscience, industry, or legal experience other than doing tax returns for oil and gas companies.

I was handily defeated in spite of spending over $600,000 to do the following:

1) Distribute two direct mail pieces to almost 500,000 Republican primary households;

2) Run a 60-second radio spot on TX State Radio Network, supplemented by key conservative talk and Christian radio stations;

3) Run ads in several targeted newspapers;

4) RoboCalls to thousands of “Independent” households;

5) Distribute election push cards, website, Facebook page, bumper stickers, letter writing;

6) Actively campaign in-person by my campaign staff and me.

Early polling showed that the typical GOP primary voter has very little info about the position of Railroad Commissioner, what we do, or who my opponent or I were. Given the choice between “Porter” and “Carrillo” — unfortunately, the Hispanic-surname was a serious setback from which I could never recover although I did all in my power to overcome this built-in bias. I saw it last time but was able to win because the “non-Carrillo” vote was spread among three Anglo GOP primary opponents instead of just one. Also, the political dynamics have changed some since 2004.

Many of you have begun to call and/or write to express your concern over the whole situation. You are correct to be concerned over the fact that the GOP (our party) still has these tendencies to not be able to elect or retain highly qualified candidates who WANT to continue serving the public as I do. It is indeed a shame. Nevertheless, I refuse to walk away in shame because I know that my team and I did just about all we could have done to ensure that the primary electorate knew of my qualifications, expertise, and experience. The rest was beyond my control. I also urge party leaders to not alienate the Hispanic/Latino voter in Texas, as we now comprise about 39% of the population and we remain the fastest-growing minority group in the nation.
