Jessica Alba graces the cover of Siempre Mujer magazine this month and says she wants to help her daughter avoid the criticism she’s faced as an adult because of her non-fluency in Spanish. Alba, who has been criticized in the media for trying to distance herself from her Latina roots, has recently hired a Hispanics studies professor to teach her and her 19-month-old daughter, Honor Marie, how to speak Spanish.
“God knows that I wish I was raised bilingual,” Alba told Siempre Mujer, “But it wasn’t to be.”
“I tried to explain to [journalists] that in this country I’m considered Latina and, thus, I consider myself Latina as well,” Alba says. “I identify with Mexicans. It’s in my blood whether or not I speak Spanish.”
“I want to make movies in Spanish,” Alba tells Siempre Mujer. “There are so many interesting themes and stories that are worth sharing, like the lives of immigrants, for example. There’s a whole world that hasn’t been sufficiently explored and I want to be part of it — the violence on the Mexican borders, the political upheaval in Venezuela and Bolivia and the drug trafficking in Colombia.”
